Riding Like Nomads: A Two-Wheel Expedition on Four-Leg Trails

Riding Like Nomads:
A Two-Wheel Expedition on Four-Leg Trails

This is a fully supported cross-country (XC) cycling expedition across the Mongolian steppe. It is our two-wheel alternative to traditional equestrian treks, following the same routes used by nomadic herders for generations. We navigate the same river valleys and mountain passes as the local horsemen, moving at the pace of the land.

These guided cycling trips are built for riders who prioritize active exploration. Our logistics balance technical support and safety with the essential comforts of a vacation. For USA-based riders, this is an opportunity to ride in a landscape without fences, paved roads, or traffic, just open space, without "private property" signs, much like the Rocky Mountains were two hundred years ago.
The Route and Terrain

The Route and Terrain

Our journey follows the same routes used by nomadic herders for generations. This terrain is functional and varied, ranging from established 4x4 tracks to narrow single-track trails carved by livestock. In many sections, the path disappears entirely, allowing for true cross-country riding across the open, trackless steppe.

What to Expect:

  • Surfaces: Primarily hard-packed dirt and natural gravel found in the central and northern valleys. You will navigate rolling grasslands, river crossings, and occasional "washboard" ridges. We specifically avoid deep sand routes to ensure the terrain remains rideable.

  • Daily Distance: 35–50 miles, adjusted for terrain and wind conditions.

  • Elevation: Characterized by long, gradual inclines and mountain passes rather than steep switchbacks. Average daily gain is approximately 2,000 feet.

  • Support: A full logistics team providing mechanical aid, camp support, and vehicle transit if conditions or distance exceed your daily comfort level.

  • Cultural Context: Because these are active nomadic corridors, you will ride past working herds and family camps. These interactions are integrated into the route, offering a practical look at nomadic hospitality and life on the move.

  • The Experience: While the logistics are professional, the spirit is a vacation. We prioritize a pace that allows for the enjoyment of the landscape, first-hand cultural interaction, and the unique satisfaction of a cross-country expedition.

Your Ride: Equipment & Logistics

Your Ride: Equipment & Logistics

Equipment choice is critical for the constant vibrations and varied textures of the Mongolian landscape. We provide a fleet specifically maintained for off-road durability and mechanical reliability in remote environments.

  • The Fleet: High-quality hardtail mountain bikes, professionally tuned and fitted to your measurements. These bikes are selected for their stability on gravel and livestock trails.

  • Maintenance: Our mechanics travel with the group to handle daily tuning, tire-pressure adjustments, and field repairs required by the terrain.

  • Personal Setup: While we provide the bikes, feel free to bring your own pedals and saddles to ensure familiar contact points.

Bringing Your Own Bike

If you choose to fly with your own bicycle, our team provides logistical support for transport, assembly, and tire selection specific to the central steppe’s soil textures.

The Mongolian steppe is an off-grid environment, and our logistics are designed to balance remote exploration, fun, and recovery. With our full support crew and expedition cooks, we camp out most days to stay close to the best riding lines. We integrate traditional ger camps and natural hot springs at key points in the itinerary for more fun and cultural interaction.

Rider Profile: Is This Expedition for You?

Rider Profile: Is This Expedition for You?

We design our cycling trips for those who prioritize authentic access over artificial comfort. This bicycle touring adventure is a fit for:

  • The Rider: You have a normal balance, good attitude, and a sense of humor when the occasional "washboard" ridges of the steppe get bumpy.

  • The Off-Grid Enthusiast: You prefer the silence of a private wild camp near the best riding lines over the noise of a crowded tourist hub.

  • The Cultural Explorer: You value stopping at any random family on the way and experiencing the famous nomadic hospitality. This creates the kind of unforgettable cycling vacation that generic tours cannot replicate.

  • The Supported Adventurer: You want a shared challenge that is fully backed by a professional crew and a high-quality ride.

As experienced travel organizers, we handle the complex logistics of the Mongolian interior so you can focus entirely on the experience and the ride.

Why Choose Gobi Travel?

Why Choose Gobi Travel?

The "Total Stranger" Rule: Because we live and ride here, our routes are built on long-standing nomadic relationships, allowing for spontaneous hospitality at any random family we encounter. In true nomadic tradition, the further you have traveled, the more special you are considered as a guest. We purposefully avoid high-traffic settlements where this culture is fading, and ensure your interactions remain authentic.

  • Mobile Infrastructure: Our team manages full-service wild camps and high-protein field nutrition, keeping you fueled for 35–50-mile days without the need to return to major routes unnecessarily.

  • The Fleet: We maintain a dedicated inventory of 29" mountain bikes and e-MTBs, spec'd with high-volume tires specifically for "washboard" ridges and gravel trails.

  • Support: Every expedition includes a full support team, allowing you to focus entirely on your ride and the “close encounter of the nomadic kind”.

FAQs

What level of fitness is required for cycling in Mongolia?

You don’t need to be an elite athlete, but you do need endurance and adaptability. Expect to spend 5–7 hours in the saddle daily, covering 35–50 miles (50–80km), divided between morning and afternoon sessions. The challenge isn't just the distance; it’s the unfiltered environment, wind, sun, and air. If you have a decent base of fitness and a "can-do" attitude, our support vehicles are always there to provide a "reset" if the day gets too long. For those seeking more, we offer alternative daily routes for an added challenge.

What are the trail and road conditions for Mongolia bike tours?

Most of our routes are unpaved nomadic tracks, hard-packed earthy trails, and gravel plateaus. We will occasionally encounter the famous "washboard" ridges, corrugations in the earth that require a sense of humor and a relaxed grip. Singing and whistling also do the trick. We purposefully avoid high-traffic areas, meaning we’ll mostly share the "road" with horses, yaks, and the nomadic herder.

What support and equipment are provided on your cycling expeditions?

We provide a professional mobile infrastructure so you can focus on the ride. This includes our fleet of Attila 29" hardtails (or the e-bike upgrade) and our full support crew, including bilingual guides, a field kitchen, and camp staff. We handle the mechanics, the meals, and the logistics; you only need to bring your personal riding gear and a sense of adventure.
When is the best time of year for a cycling vacation in Mongolia?

The riding window is June through September, and each month offers a different "grit" level:

  • June: The steppe is at its greenest with vibrant wildflowers. The air is fresh, but be prepared for the occasional strong wind that tests your resolve.
  • July: The warmest month and the height of the Naadam festival culture. It’s perfect for those who want to combine long riding days with the energy of Mongolia's national games.
  • August: High summer starts to transition into stable, golden days. This is the most reliable window for clear skies and dry trails.
  • September: The "Connoisseur’s Choice." The flies are gone, the air is crisp, and the landscape turns a deep amber. While the days are perfect for riding, nights can be chilly, requiring proper layering. All weather is nice, with proper attire.

Are E-MTB (Electric Mountain Bike) tours available in Mongolia?

Yes. We are one of the few operators, and likely the only one, in Mongolia with the specialized mobile infrastructure required to support E-MTB touring.

We maintain a dedicated fleet of full-suspension e-bikes, specifically chosen for their durability against "washboard" vibration. We manage all off-grid charging via our own support vehicles. This allows you to utilize pedal assist to conquer mountain passes and stay fresh for the scenery, rather than just the struggle. Because of the complex battery logistics and high demand, these must be reserved well in advance.
